Advocacy Circle: Expression in the Workplace: Appearance and “Professionalism.”

This circle features three notable guest speakers: Salima Ebrahim (Chief of Staff for the City of Edmonton), Haiqa Cheema (Ministerial advisor to the Attorney General of British Columbia), and Lori McConnell (Executive Director, Suit Yourself-Wardrobe for Women Association). With this event, we’re launching our series of advocacy circles, centring around “Expression in the Workplace”. This three-part series will discuss topics including: the role of identity in defining “professionalism” in the workplace, how the safety of women and gender minorities is impacted by their self-expression, and the importance of freedom of expression in the workplace.

The first part of this series will be taking place on Sunday February 26th at 1:30-3:00pm MST via ZoomWe will be discussing how “professionalism” is defined and how that definition involves racial, gendered, and classed forms of discrimination. Our speakers will expand on their own personal encounters with the relationship between beauty standards and power in the workforce, as well as provide insight to how appearance may impact your experience in the workplace.

We would love for you to attend our event and take part in this discussion with our guest speakers! This will be a casual and safe environment to explore these difficult topics, and hear from individuals with professional experience. You can register for the event now using the link below:
